Painting Guide - Deathwing Knight

In this painting log, you will read the steps and paints used to achieve the Deathwing Knight model pictured above.  From start to finish, this took around 6 hours to complete at my painting speed.

Prime the model with Citadel's Zandri Dust spray.

Basecoat all armor areas with Ushabti Bone.

Wash all armor areas with Agrax Earthshade.

Basecoat tunic areas with Caliban Green.

Paint armor areas with Ushabti Bone, leaving wash in the recesses.

Basecoat all gold, green, red, and brown areas.

Basecoat all black, white, metal, and face areas.

Wash face with Reikland Fleshshade, and all non-bone colored areas with Nuln Oil

Paint raised robe areas with Caliban Green, leaving the wash in the recesses.  Highlight robes by painting with warpstone glow, ensuring that the paint is very thin.  Apply several layers, gradually reapplying over the most raised areas to give it the highlight.  Edge highlight all grey areas with Mechanicus Standard Grey, leaving wash in recesses.  Edge highlight again using Dawnstone.

Final highlight on robes using Moot Green.  Apply a thin line on the areas where the Warpstone Glow meets an edge or where light pools the most.  Avoid the direct top of the hood.  Final edge highlight the grey areas using Administratum Grey.

Highlight all white areas with Ulthuan Grey, leaving the previous Nuln Oil wash in the recesses.  Edge highlight with White Scar.

This is a simple and effective method of doing eyes that I have been using for a few months now and have been happy with the result.  Paint the entire sockets with White Scar.

Paint a small black dot for the iris using Abbadon Black.  Depending on the eye position and shape, it is often easier to paint a cat-like line straight up and down.  Be careful to get the dots positioned in the same location in both sockets, or he will look cross-eyed.  You can easily paint over the sockets with white and try again if you don't like the placement.  It will look weird at this step, but be patient.

"Push" the eyes back into the head by painting with Bugman's Glow (or whatever skin tone you base coated with) around the eye sockets.

Highlight face with Cadian Fleshtone.

Final highlight on most raised areas with Kislev Flesh.

Edge highlight all armor areas with Screaming Skull.  Final edge highlight with White Scar.

Highlight red areas with Mephiston Red, leaving wash in the recesses.  Be especially careful on the mace handle to only paint the diamonds, leaving the wash in the grid.  Apply highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet.  For the handle, highlight the top half of each diamond.

Final touches are highlighting metal areas with Ironbreaker, and painting the scroll writing with Abaddon Black.  I painted the entire base black to prepare for my basing technique.

Enjoy your new Deathwing Knight!
